Welcome to 31 Days of Resolutions! Turning the calendar to a new year has NEVER felt better. Oola is here to celebrate with inspiration and motivation for each day of January. Check out the rest of our resolutions here.

"New year, new me" is my typical mantra for the week leading up to New Year's Day. Yet, come New Year's Eve, I'm often celebrating with greasy Chinese takeout and enjoying the leftovers the next day because, hey, New Year's Day is a holiday after all. Admittedly, "I can always start that diet tomorrow" is not the best starting point for anyone wanting to get serious about weight loss in the new year. This year, I decided that I needed to ditch my 2020 lifestyle and those unhealthy habits, and quickly!

If you're anything like me, googling how to keep your New Year's resolution may sound shamefully familiar. Losing weight always tops my resolutions, but I never seem to see it through completion.

Putting 2020 behind us a fast as possible, 2021 must be the year of change. I searched the "most googled diets in 2020." I knew fad diets weren't the answer and extreme eating styles wouldn't last as I'd eventually fall off the wagon. I wanted a diet that would help me focus on long-term change. That's when I discovered Noom, the trendy weight loss app that focuses on healthy lifestyle changes. Finally, a psychology-based weight loss method that could help me kick unhealthy habits to the curb for good!

Getting Started With Noom

Before signing up for a 14-day free trial, I took Noom's free comprehensive psychology-based evaluation. The detailed quiz features three sections:

  1. Preliminary lifestyle and demographic profile
  2. Habits and behaviors
  3. Activity and nutrition

Among many other things, the quiz asked about my height and current weight, health conditions, physical abilities, and limitations, as well as my preferred weight loss goal. The quiz was exceptionally thorough. After I completed it, Noom provided me with a personalized plan and the monthly cost.

When Noom revealed their estimation on how much time it may take for me to lose my desired amount of weight, I felt hopeful and determined, armed with something truly unique. The on-boarding process of Noom already felt different, not a one-size-fits-all diet; Noom was customized to me. I felt confident that I was starting off on the right foot.

I eagerly signed up for one of Noom's most popular subscription plans, the five-month plan at $149 ($29.80 per month) which my quiz result recommended for my personalized weight loss plan. Noom would charge me $149 every five months as I committed to partnering with them on working towards my weight loss goal. Those looking to save more cash are encouraged to make a longer commitment, as the price of your monthly subscription drops significantly.

Noom Cost Per Year

  • Monthly billing: $59 per month or $708 per year
  • 2 months: $594 per year
  • 3 months: $516 per year
  • 4 months: $417 per year
  • 5 months: $149: $357.60 per year
  • 6 months: $318 per year
  • 12 months: $199 per year (annual billing)

At first glance, the cost of Noom's subscription may cause a slight moment of pause. But, remember that these prices are less than your average monthly gym membership or pricey home gym equipment that eventually collects dust in the basement corner. Making a larger investment into a weight loss program can also help you stick to your goals. What do you have to lose aside from unwanted weight?

Stop Sabotaging Your Weightloss Goals

Ever since I gave birth five years ago, I've struggled with losing weight. My weight loss journey has always been stopped in its tracks, met with looming frustration. I'm always left asking myself, why can't I lose weight?

That's where Noom has helped me where other dieting programs have failed. Noom uses a behavioral approach to help your mind build those healthier habits needed to set you on the right track. Noom has taught me that I do have the power to lose weight. I don't need restrictive dieting, shakes, or diet pills. All I needed was the right mindset.

The success behind Noom stems from their simple philosophy that to lose weight you need to "break your self-sabotaging behaviors and develop balanced relationships with food and yourself that last."

Noom App Review: How It Stands Out From the Rest

Like other weight loss apps, Noom offers food, exercise, and weight logging. Users can even track their blood pressure and blood sugar. Noom makes tracking food simple with an extensive database and the ability to scan barcodes. Noom also allows users to copy and paste a recipe URL to get an accurate calorie count. Now that's handy!

What makes Noom stand out from other calorie-tracking apps is its special features such as its behavior change education program. This unique psychology-based program features daily interactive articles and quizzes, one-on-one health coaching, and a cool color-coding system to help categorize foods.

No foods are off-limits with Noom. Noom focuses on nutrient density with its color-coding system tying into healthier balances and positive relationships with food. Noom's helpful color-coded visual of each meal is an eye-opening realization of which foods should be consumed less and which should venture onto your plate more often.

Noom's color-coded system quickly made me realize how often I gravitate toward highly caloric, nutrient-poor "red" foods more than "yellow" and "green," foods that have the most nutrition for the fewest calories. Noom helped me be more mindful of what I was putting on my plate, which kept me on the right track.

Along with a manageable personalized list of steps to help me reach my weight loss goals, I also had access to an assigned health coach. Having my own personal coach who cared about my goals was such a lifeline. My coach was always there, offering gentle reminders when I needed to stick to my goals and words of encouragement when I felt stuck.

On average, Noomers lose 18lbs in 16 weeks, 86% of whom are able to keep the weight off beyond one year.

In my first 10 days using Noom, I lost five pounds! Noom works and I'm excited and determined to reach my forecasted weight loss goal by May 2021.
