Spanish architects recently designed a floating farm which has the capacity to produce 10 extra tons of food each year without requiring fresh water or land. This self-sustaining farm is still conceptual, but many claim that it is not far from becoming a reality. The architect team, Forward Thinking Architecture, claims that the project “is not science fiction.” This floating farm is not meant to solve all of humanity’s hunger problems. Rather, the idea is for it to simply complement already existing food systems to help reduce food shortages and food risk problems.
In theory, this food system would be able to produce not only fruits, vegetables, herbs, and leafy greens, but also fish. Energy for the floating farm would be obtained from solar panels covering the top level. This massive farm would be 204,000 square meters which would be impractical on land but may just work on water where space is not such an issue.
