McDonald’s Pizza sounds totally made up, but it was an actual, literal craze that took the country by storm. You ’90s kids out there might remember McDonald’s Pizza from your childhood. They were all the rage back in the late ’80s and early ’90s, but the drive-thru craze eventually made the national menu item obsolete since pizzas took much longer to cook and serve than your typical cheeseburger. McDonald’s began quietly removing them from most of their restaurants around the country, but there are some places that time forgot. These magical places still serve McDonald’s Pizza, much to our amazed delight.
Nowadays, there are only three McDonald’s locations in the world that serve pizza. One is located in Pomeroy, Ohio, one is in Spencer, West Virginia, and the last is in Orlando, Florida. McDonald’s franchise owner Greg Mills owns both the Pomeroy and the Spencer locations, which are only about 90 miles apart, and personally ensured the franchises kept the elusive McPizza on the menu. The pies come in two sizes: personal pan pizzas, and family sized, which is presumably big enough for a small family, or just one very, very hungry person.
According to the lucky ones who were able to get their hands on a McDonald’s pizza, the taste isn’t quite the same as they remembered from the original. After all, it’s been over 20 years since McDonald’s Pizza was offered in McDonald’s nationwide, so the recipe isn’t exactly the same as it was. One Instagram user commented, “It kind of reminded me of the pizza Subway has. Not the best pizza in the world but not bad either. It was probably better fresh though. I had to reheat it. It didn’t taste much like I remembered but it’s also been like 20 years haha.” Though the taste might be so-so, some diners thought the pizza paired well with the fries, which just opens up a world of delicious possibilities.
Still, despite the lackluster reviews, people travel from all over for just a taste of this pizza pie. One group of Canadian men traveled close to 500 miles just to get a bite of this nostalgia-inducing pizza. They documented their journey to the Spencer location on YouTube. On their way there, they were stopped by a Border Patrol agent, who, obviously, asked them what the purpose of their visit to the US was. They answered that they wanted to get a McDonald’s Pizza. The agent responded, “You’re going all the way there for that?” The answer was obviously yes, though the guys seemed a bit underwhelmed by the food.
Perhaps the fanciest of the three, the Orlando location, is the only “new” McDonald’s to serve the nostalgic dish. Built in March of 2016, this location not only serves pizza, but, unlike any other McDonald’s in the United States, it also offers pasta and a hearty brunch option that includes omelets and waffles. Pizzas at the Orlando location are also made to order, which opens up a world of possibilities. At 18,000 square feet, it’s listed as one of the largest McDonald’s in the world, which makes a lot of sense when you consider its super-sized selection of menu items.
Don’t get too excited about the possibility of a McDonald’s serving a pizza outside of those three locations anytime soon. Cooking all those pizzas take time, and McDonald’s prides itself on how fast they serve their customers. Still, those three locations are prime targets for summer road trips. All you’ll need is good friends, some traveling tunes, and the wide, open highway and you’re well on your way to the perfect summer vacation.
