Celebrate your beloved doggie's birthday with a tasty homemade dog birthday cake, made from wholesome pet-safe ingredients. Your furry friend will be spoiled rotten when you prepare a pupcake made from our easy dog birthday cake recipe.
Our yummy dog birthday cake features two layers of peanut butter, applesauce, and honey cake drizzled with creamy icing. Dog cake is not just for birthdays! Serve your fur baby a savory dog cake to celebrate the following occasions:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease 2 6-inch round cake pans with butter, dust them with flour and set them aside.
In a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, mix the flour, baking soda, baking powder, peanut butter, oil, applesauce, egg, and honey.
Divide the batter evenly between the 2 prepared pans. Bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Allow the cakes to cool in their pans for at least 10 minutes. Run a butter knife around the edges of the cakes to loosen them from the pans. Then invert the cakes onto a wire cooling rack and allow them to cool completely before frosting.
To make the icing, add cornstarch to a medium bowl. Add the water a couple of teaspoons at a time. When you've added about 1/4 of the water, stir in the honey. Add the remaining water until you reach your desired consistency. Icing will be thin but will thicken over time. Frost dog cake when cool.
Caution: do not feed your dog any peanut butter that contains xylitol. Xylitol is a naturally occurring alcohol found in most plant material and commonly used as a sugar substitute.
If you prefer a softer frosting for your homemade dog birthday cake, beat 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream until stiff peaks form. Frost your pupcake as desired.
Baking homemade treats for your adorable pooch is a great way to avoid store-bought treats that are loaded with preservatives, flavorings, and colors. But when baking your own homemade dog treats, you must take special precautions to prevent injury and illness in your furry friend.
