Has someone ever said anything to you that you honestly didn’t think they were serious about? Of course, it’s super embarrassing when your awkward laugh leaves the person confused if not slightly upset. Here, people revisit the whacky thing a stranger said that left them scratching their head.
All stories have been edited for clarity.
Are We Doing This Or Not?

“When I was eighteen, I went with my girlfriend to Las Vegas to meet her parents. I found out that her dad and mom lived in separate houses right across the street from one another. I found it strange, but definitely not the strangest thing that would happen during that trip.
Her dad came over to her mom’s house to meet me. I couldn’t help but notice he was dressed in a suit. I thought maybe he was just a fancy dresser. He kept asking me questions about my family and how I felt about his daughter.
Then at some point, my girlfriend’s dad checked his watch and asked, ‘So are we doing this or what?’
Confused, I asked him what he meant. That’s when my girlfriend told him that nothing was happening in a stern voice. Other than that, he seemed to like me, and we went through the trip on fairly pleasant terms, but nothing else happened of any note.
Once we get back home to Florida, my girlfriend decided to tell me that her dad thought we were coming out to Vegas to get married and he dressed up because he was planning on taking us to get married that day.”
Commitment Issues

“I was out on a date with this girl for the first time. We were playing a few ice breakers before we started having a deep conversation. The girl brought up commitment and relationships but I didn’t think it was a big deal because I assumed she was just feeling me out.
Well I was right and wrong.
My date said she ‘doesn’t do friends with guys.’
‘Cool!’ I said. ‘I’m a little on the jealous side.
That’s when my date scoffed and said, ‘No like, you are going to commit to me and be exclusive THEN we can work on becoming friends.’
I let out a casual laugh thinking she was joking, but when my date stared at me with a blank face, I realized she was completely serious.
I then said, ‘Well are you asking me to be your boyfriend before I even know you? That’s a bit odd. Asking a stranger to commit isn’t my thing.’
The girl then said, ‘Yes, that is exactly what I mean. I don’t do this whole you date me for a few weeks then decide I’m not for you and you decide to go date another girl and end it with me. I’ll be damned if you are even going to speak to another girl while you’re my man. You are either going to commit now, be my boyfriend through thick and thin, make your business my business and be my everything or you might as well walk out now.’
‘That’s dating,’ I said. ‘I get what you mean but that’s the reality of dating. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t.’
The girl snapped back about how she was almost thirty with no kids, no husband and the next guy she dates WILL marry her and give her children whether he wants to or not….
I slapped forty bucks down on the table for a twenty dollar check, apologized for ‘wasting her time’ and walked out.
I couldn’t believe it.”
The Setup

“Year back, my parents were helping me look for a place to live while I went to college. We were checking websites like Craigslist and finally lucked out when we found a place for a decent price. It was also incredibly close to the school. We called the number listed and a young lady answered. We talked about the living conditions, the monthly payments, etc.
Everything was perfect. The girl on the phone did say that I wouldn’t have the place to myself and that I’d be sharing it and splitting the rent. I figured and was totally cool with that.
My family and I went to check out the house in person. When we got there we were greeted by a lady with an appearance that matched the voice on the phone. Beside her was her seventy-something year old grandmother.
My first thought was, ‘This grandma probably owns the house and rents it out to make a profit.’
That quickly went out the window when the young woman asked what my class schedule was like. As we were touring the house, it dawned on me: The old woman was going to be my house-mate. They weren’t looking for a tenant. They were looking for a caretaker. However, the ad online NEVER mentioned it.
The young lady made comments like, ‘If you could occasionally just make she took her medicine, that’d be great.’ I just looked at my parents and they were on the same page.
We told them we were going to continue looking around and left. My mother was dumbstruck.
‘She was going to leave her grandmother’s health in the hands of an 18 year old?’ We felt bad for them, but there was no way in hell I was going to unofficially take responsibility for some random person’s health.”
Wingman

“One night I was hanging out in a bar in downtown Nashville. I was playing wingman for my buddy and fending off advances from drunk girls who thought I was more attractive because ‘I’m married…‘
Later into the night, I started making small-talk with a lanky younger dude who said he was in town to play bass for some various bands. We talked about life in between songs. After a while, the guy announced that he recently got married. We then talked about our wives for a few minutes.
After a long silence, the guy stared off in the distance and said, ‘Well, time to get this ring off and find somebody to screw, am I right?’
I had to do a double-take.
It was at this point that I realized how drunk the kid was. I spent the next thirty minutes explaining to him that no, being in a different zip code didn’t count as a legitimate reason to cheat on your wife.”
