Any true coffee addict likely has tried, and delighted in, the dark spiced taste of Turkish Coffee. Coffee is an integral part of Turkish culture and its importance is mirrored in the Arabic language. The Arabic words for breakfast and brown literally mean “before coffee” and “color of coffee” respectively. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that a culture which values coffee so heavily also brews some of the best coffee we’ve ever tasted. We are excited to share with you the secret to creating your own authentic Turkish Coffee, courtesy of food.com:
1 cup water
1 tablespoon of extra fine ground coffee (Tip: coffee must be very fine. If you are unable to find finely ground Arabic coffee, ask your local coffee house to grind your beans for Turkish coffee)
1?8 teaspoon ground cardamom or 1 cardamom pod
1. Bring water to a boil in an ibrik or a small saucepan (for those of us that don’t have an ibrik, a pot specifically designed to brew Turkish Coffee, at hand in our kitchens).
2. Remove from heat; add coffee and cardamom. You can add sugar too, if you like. Turkish coffee is unique in that the sugar is brewed into the coffee rather than added after to eliminate need to stir.
3. Return to heat and bring to boil.
4. When foam forms, remove from heat. Return to heat and again allow foam to form. Remove from heat when foam forms again. Tip: If difficulty creating foam, try pouring coffee into saucepan/ibrik from high above.
5. Pour into cup and allow coffee grounds to settle (grinds left behind are often used to tell one’s fortune). Option to add cardamom pod for enhanced flavor.
