KitKats are undergoing a fruity pink makeover just in time for Valentine’s Day.
In September, Swiss chocolate producer Barry Callebaut introduced a new type of chocolate made from “ruby” cocoa beans. Unlike milk, bitter or white chocolates, ruby chocolate is unique for its naturally pink coloring. In a statement made at ruby chocolate’s unveiling, the company said it “offers a totally new taste experience, which is not bitter, milky or sweet, but a tension between berry-fruitiness and luscious smoothness.”
Now, Nestle is dipping into the ruby chocolate market with “KitKat Chocolatory Sublime Ruby.”

The KitKats were just released in stores throughout Japan and South Korea, but are available online in the U.S., U.K., Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland and select regions of China.
Japan is the obvious choice for unveiling new Kit Kat flavors. According to CNN, KitKat is Japan’s top-selling chocolate brand. Its sales have grown over 50 percent since 2010, which has been fueled with new flavor releases throughout the years, beginning with Green Tea KitKats in 2004. Since then, wasabi, cherry blossom, and sushi-flavored KitKats have also been developed in Japan. Last year, Nestle opened a factory in the country specifically for new KitKat flavor creations.
In Japan, the Ruby KitKats will cost 400 yen, which is about $3.60 USD. Nestle will be selling the ruby chocolate KitKats at pop-up stores across Japan in February for Valentine’s Day. So if you’re tired of getting your sweetheart those cliché Russell Stovers boxes every February 14th, maybe you should put in an order for “KitKat Chocolatory.”
