God, I’m the worst. This is why the aliens don’t visit us. No one is as gross as you right now… oh, sorry. I was just going through a list of thoughts I usually have when I eat pizza for breakfast.
For the most part, a lot of us have been told that eating pizza for breakfast is unhealthy and the true superfood of the hungover college student, but it turns out that pizza is actually healthier for you than a lot of breakfast cereals.
According to The Daily Meal, a slice of pizza has approximately the same calories as a bowl of cereal with milk. They spoke with dietician Chelsey Amer who explained, “You may be surprised to find out that an average slice of pizza and a bowl of cereal with whole milk contain nearly the same amount of calories. However, pizza packs a much larger protein punch, which will keep you full and boost satiety throughout the morning.”
Amer added that a slice of pizza also “contains more fat and much less sugar than most cold cereals, so you will not experience a quick sugar crash.”
Though, don’t put all your eggs in the pizza basket just yet. Dietician Keri Gans spoke with New York Post to explain that pizza isn’t the go-to option when up against all cereals. Gans said that if you choose a cereal with benefits like fiber or ones that maintain low blood sugar, these would be the healthier option. She added that you can top your cereal with healthy toppings such as berries, nuts, fruit, or yogurt. She added that when looking for a good cereal, you’d want to make sure that the grams of sugar are three or less. You’d also want to ensure you have at least six grams of fiber.
So there you have it. If you’re chowing down on sugary (and frankly, the better) cereals, you’d probably be better off with a slice of pizza. If you’re one of those weirdos who actually pays attention to the nutrition of their food… you’d still probably be better with pizza.
