Butter and toast is a classic combo, but it can get boring after a while. To get some variety in your life, try switching out the butter for some more exciting spreads.

    Jam

Jam is a classic condiment for toast. Since you can make jam out of any fruit, finding your favorite flavor should be easy as pie. Add some cottage cheese for a more filling breakfast.

    Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is chock-full of protein as well as being delicious. Dress it up with some sliced bananas or sprinkle on some chocolate chips. You can also try other nut butters like almond butter or pecan butter.

    Nutella

The hazelnut and chocolate of Nutella is a killer combination. Add some chopped fruit or a sprinkle of cinnamon for a garnish. Or you can just spread it on your toast for a delicious and nutritious way to start the day!

    Chocolate

If you have a sweet tooth but aren’t exactly nuts for nuts, most supermarkets now sell spreadable chocolate by itself. Add on some sliced fruits such as strawberries for an even more filling breakfast.

    Cream Cheese

Cream cheese is another versatile toast spread. You can slice up some cucumbers and add a bit of salt and pepper. Or if you prefer a more filling breakfast, you can add smoked salmon and a bit of dill.

    Honey

If you have a sweet tooth but want something a bit healthier than chocolate, try pouring some honey on your toast. To dress it up a bit add some apple slices before drizzling it on.

    Refried Beans

Refried beans are a very versatile toast spread. You can add some cheese and sour cream to make your own seven-layer dip toast. Or shred some leftover meat from last night’s dinner to have your own toast taco! Or even some avocado as pictured.

    Bruschetta

Bruschetta is a traditional Italian appetizer. Simply dice up some tomatoes, add some olive oil, salt, pepper, and a little bit of garlic, and you’ve got a delicious way to start the day.

    Hummus

Hummus is a middle-eastern dip made of mashed garbanzo beans. While hummus is fine spread on its own, you can try adding any number of toppings. Carrots, cucumber, tomato, mango, and any other thing you might normally dip into hummus.

    Avocado

Mash up some avocado to spread on your toast. Add some tomato and bacon for a twist on the classic BLT. If you prefer something more simple, add sliced tomatoes and drizzle a bit of lemon juice on.

    Mozzarella

Fresh mozzarella alone is a great thing to put on toast. Add a bit of tomato paste first and shred the mozzarella for a breakfast pizza with all your favorite toppings!

    Whipped Cream and Berries

If you prefer a lighter breakfast or just have an aching sweet tooth, try slapping some whipped cream on top of your toast. Then slice up a mix of your favorite berries and you have the perfect addition to your breakfast.

    Ricotta

This delicious cheese tastes fine on its own with a bit of olive oil and sea salt. If you’re in the mood for something more filling, add some shredded chicken breast and boiled spinach to your ricotta toast.

    Pie Filling

Like jam, pie filling comes in many flavors. Either save some leftover filling from a home-made pie or just buy a pre-made mix. You can also try substituting apple sauce for apple pie filling.

    American Cheese

Melting some American cheese on your toast will give you an open-faced grilled cheese. Add an egg and some sausage to make it a filling breakfast sandwich!
