Red Velvet Peanut Butter Blossoms
- 1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 tablespoons cocoa powder, unsweetened
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 3/4 cup peanut butter
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 2 teaspoons red gel food color
- 1/4 cup red sanding sugar
- 1 bag Hershey Kisses, milk chocolate
- medium bowl

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
In a medium bowl, sift flour, cocoa, and baking soda. Set aside.
In a stand mixer or using a hand mixer, cream the peanut butter, butter, salt, and sugars. Add eggs, vanilla, and red gel food color; beat until well blended.
Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients. Combine thoroughly, until cookie dough forms.
In a small bowl, pour a quarter cup of red sanding sugar. Roll dough into one-inch balls. Carefully roll each ball in the red sanding sugar, and place on an ungreased cookie sheet, two inches apart.
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes. While cookies are baking, unwrap your chocolate kisses. Remove cookies from oven; immediately place one chocolate kiss in the center of each cookie.
To make chocolate kisses softer, place cookies back in the oven for 15 seconds. Remove, and set cookies on cooling rack. Enjoy!
Red gel food coloring achieves the deep red color of the red velvet peanut blossom cookies. Liquid red food coloring can be used, however your cookies may end up with a pinker tone. Note that placing the cookies back in the oven with the kisses on top to soften, will only work well with traditional milk chocolate Hershey kisses as other varieties will melt.

If you’re working with any of the Kisses varieties, you’ll want to do a couple of test runs to see how quickly they melt on the freshly-baked cookie. For example, Hugs Kisses will melt faster than classic chocolate Kisses. For anything that melts faster, you’ll want to add the candy later than you would add chocolate Kisses, however, be careful not to let the cookies cool too much, or they can’t be pressed.
