Occasionally you run into recipes combining two foods you never would have brought together. Everyone likes tacos, and everyone enjoys a good bowl of soup, but what if we combined them? Taco soup is a revolutionary dish that brings two of our favorite comfort foods together. To celebrate its uniqueness, we’re bringing you our go-to taco soup recipe that you can follow to a tee or tweak to your tastes.
Simple But Tasty Taco Soup Recipe
Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1 cup water
- 1 can diced tomatoes
- 1 can pinto beans, drained
- 1 can chili beans, drained
- 1 can tomato sauce
- 1 can whole kernel corn, drained
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 2 tablespoons taco seasoning
- Shredded cheddar for garnish
- Sour cream for garnish
Supplies
- Crock pot
- Large pot
- Large saucepan
Directions
Add your beef to a large saucepan and cook over medium-high heat until no longer pink. Drain the excess fat.
Toss in the onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes or until brown.
Transfer the ingredients to a large pot.
Add the remaining ingredients and mix to ensure the flavours combine.
Bring everything to a boil and let simmer for 15-20 minutes; you can also transfer the drained ingredients to a crock pot and simmer for 6-8 hours on low heat or 3-4 hours on high heat.
Serve with cheddar cheese and sour cream.
Additional Ingredients
Protein
Now, we did say you can mix and match ingredients and we stand by our word. The ingredients we used are traditional taco additions, but you can always use turkey burger meat or chicken for protein. The cooking times might vary based on what you choose, but it’s nothing you can’t work around.
Add-Ons
The best part of a taco is making it your own. While we lean towards pinto and chili beans, you can branch off the beaten path and pair kidney with regular black beans. Sometimes, though, corn and beans just don’t cut it. Toss in some chopped red and green peppers for extra flavor or a can of green olives.
Playing around with spice is another great way to express your personal tastes. Consider the following to make your taco soup even more flavourful:
- oregano
- cilantro
- garlic
- paprika (smoked paprika adds a unique kick!)
- cumin
- red pepper flakes
Garnishes
Last but never least is the taco soup garnish. Sour cream and shredded cheese are pretty classic, but you can also add diced avocado, tortilla chips, fresh cilantro, a slice of lime, or chopped green onions. The world is yours, however, so feel free to add whatever you like or experiment with different ingredients.
Building the perfect taco soup recipe is easy peasy. You can use whichever ingredients suit your preferences or use ours as a starting point. Whichever method you choose, a hearty bowl of taco soup unique to you is just a few ingredients away.
