If a picture is worth a thousand words, then these images must be worth multitudes. We often associate photos with happy memories, pretty sunsets, and selfies, but often times they can capture one’s last moments. These eerie photos are as peculiar as they are haunting and mysterious.
Ki-Suk Han, 2012
This was the last image of Ki-Suk Han after he was pushed in front of the Manhattan Q Train in New York City. The photo was captured by a freelance New York Post photographer and then published on the front page, stirring controversy.
Keith Sapsford, 1970
Keith Sapsford was a 14-year-old boy from Australia who snuck onto the landing gear of a Tokyo-bound plane. The boy fell from the plane seconds after taking off, falling 200 feet to his death. The photo was unwittingly snapped by an amateur photographer who was testing his new lens.
Robert Overcracker, 1995
Robert Overcracker was known for doing extreme stunts for homeless awareness. For his last stunt, he rode a jet ski off Niagara Falls, but unfortunately his specially designed parachute failed to deploy.
Nicholas Mevoli, 2013
Deepwater diver Nicholas Mevoli’s eyes really say it all in this striking last picture. Mevoli attempted to break the free dive world record at 236 feet. After resurfacing he couldn’t speak, fell unconscious, and died that same day from pulmonary edema.
Pacific Southwest Airlines Flight 182, 1978
This Pacific Southwest airliner fell from the sky after it tragically crashed into a small Cessna 172. This picture was snapped seconds before it hit the ground.
Jared Michael, 2014 (Pt. 1)
Now, luckily this isn’t a last picture. Teenager Jared Michael was attempting to take a selfie near some train tracks when a freight train pulled right behind. How and why the teen decided to strike a pose near such a dangerous spot remains unknown but he was luckily saved thanks to a divine intervention…

…seen here! A conductor on the train had spotted Michael and gave him a swift kick in the head to save him from the oncoming locomotive. That, or maybe he just hated selfies.
Christopher McCandless, 1992
Christopher McCandless, now known for the film based on his life, Into The Wild, is all smiles here in this last known picture of him. He may look happy but the young outdoorsman was in fact starving to death at the time. Marooned to an abandoned bus in a remote part of Alaska, McCandless body was found by hunters weeks after this photo was taken.
HMS Titanic, 1912
Historians believe that this is the last known photo of the infamous HMS Titanic. Though we may all imagine the mighty ship tipping into the Atlantic a la the James Cameron film, it is peculiar to see it in such a peaceful state.
Air France Flight 4590, 2000
The Concorde was a sleek supersonic French airliner that was mired with problems. The Air France Flight 4590 tragedy grounded them for good. A piece of debris on the runway had struck a fuel tank on the airliner causing it to ignite shortly after takeoff and crash into a nearby hotel.
