If you’re a guest in somebody’s house you’d expect to be on your best behavior, right? Well, the folks in these stories didn’t seem to get the memo. Maybe they weren’t raised correctly, but these hosts share the time they’ve had to put the hammer down on a rude houseguest.
Atrocious Abby
“After my cousin, Abby was kicked out of her house by her husband for cheating on him with at least two of his coworkers on multiple occasions and after she was kicked out of her parent’s house for causing her mom to have a mental breakdown, attempt suicide, and get sent to a mental hospital for a few days, I was her last hope.
The first day she spent complaining that I was boring because I wanted to stay in and watch tv after a full day of work instead of going out shopping or to a bar. It was a Tuesday. This continued to happen every day I didn’t take her somewhere. (She had no car and no money).
She would take calls at weird hours from guys that she’d claim to have known forever and run into another room before saying hello. She would then brag that said ‘friends’ were sending their credit card info for her to get a train ticket and hotel room for her to come to see them for one night. Then she’d beg me to pick her up or drop her off at the train station.
She started having men pick her up from my house and take her places at night when I wouldn’t want to go out or have friends over. She always came back looking a hot mess with smeared makeup and messy hair.
She ate everything in my pantry, fridge, and freezer. Including my roommate’s Nutrisystem meals. Who thinks that’s okay?
She NEVER cleaned up after herself. She had makeup crusted all over my bathroom, stained the carpet in three different rooms from spills that she didn’t even bother to attempt to wipe up and then blamed it on my roommate (who was at work with me the whole time), and ruined my couch by spilling nail polish and simply flipping the cushion over instead of wiping it up.
Continually insulted my house, my roommate, my car, my clothes, my furniture, and pretty much anything else she could pass judgment on.
But the last straw was the stockpile incident. I tend to stock up on lotions, candles, and other products from Bath & Bodyworks in my favorite scents when they go on sale once or twice a year. I usually have about 5 of each on hand at any given time for gifts or whenever I run out and I keep them in a hall closet. One day I had opened up the closet and everything was out of place, it was kind of weird but I just figured Abby needed some soap or something. A few days later, my laptop started making a bunch of noise, signaling a ton of notifications, I opened it and her eBay account is pulled up. The notifications were bids. She had individually photographed and listed everything in my stockpile as well as my furniture and some of the decorations hanging on the walls.
That night, she came home from sleeping around with yet another ‘friend’ and was greeted by her dad, all of her bags, and a bill for loss and damages. Ended up being sent to live with our crazy strict grandparents in a rural town a few hours away with a booming population of 103.
Never again.”
She Only Had One Job!
“My little sister (23 at the time) house and dog sat my 3 dogs for a month while my husband and I went to Europe (one of these dogs happens to be an 8-week old puppy of hers that we adopted because she couldn’t keep him after a recent breakup and move).
Everything seemed to be going just fine via the FaceTime calls and almost daily texts. But it was a whole other story when we got home. There was dog pee-pees and poo-poos everywhere! Under the kitchen table all over inside and the entire surrounding area by the puppies kennel.
She apparently ran out of puppy pads and instead started using our bath towels to line the kennel. Instead of washing the towels, she threw them in a pile in the backyard. When she ran out of towels, she moved onto my husband’s shirts that were in the laundry.
She also had some guy stay with her, that she allowed to smoke in our house, including our bedroom. At one point she accidentally locked herself out, climbed through a window, and broke a lamp in the process. She also broke our vacuum in her pathetic attempt to clean up before we came home.
While all of this was happening, a pipe apparently broke underground in the backyard, on day 4 of our trip. It was raining heavily so it was hard to tell; especially if you completely ignored the sound of full blast running water. And the notice that was put on our door by the city to contact them urgently. Sister took the notice set it on the table and never mentioned it. We came home to an $1800 water bill on top of everything else. It was an utter DISASTER to come home to after a month of traveling and a full day of flying. We were absolutely FURIOUS.
We made her pay to replace all of our towels, have the carpets cleaned, and she paid for the puppies’ food and pet insurance for a year. I didn’t talk to her for quite a while after that.”
The Turkish Connection
“I live really close to a major airport in my state, so I do come across some backpackers and such time to time. Though this one guy particularly stood out.
I was home from school (faked a favor heh) and I was alone since my parents were at work. Then I get this knock on the door so naturally, as a curious kid, I answered. And yes I know it was very wrong of me and that I shouldn’t be talking to strangers.
Anyway, so as soon as I open the door this guy (average bloke, 30ish) starts explaining in Turkish that he was new to this country and that his father had told him to come to this particular house. I automatically just assumed he was some distant relative and just let him in.
As soon as he gets in, he threw all his luggage in the living room and asked where everyone was. This is where things got awkward. Almost instantly as I told him I was alone, he says ‘Good! Can I take a shower?’
At the time I was only about 11-years-old, so I just showed him the way. After that, he just stayed in the living room the whole time talking to someone on the phone An hour later my mother finally gets home. I was so thankful for this yet scared for the beating I’d get for letting in this stranger. So I just locked myself in my room and refused to come out. I don’t know what happened while I was in hiding but my parents seemed okay with it and he crashed at our place for 4 days.
And those 4 days were horrible. He gradually turned into this demanding prick who used this house to his own comfort. But as my parents are religious Muslims, they still tried to be the best hosts they could. However, on the fourth day, my dad caught him trying to steal my mother’s money that she was saving for plane tickets to visit her sisters. That’s when my dad finally told this guy to get out.
Fast forward 7 years, is now married to some 19-year-old from Turkey and working as a bus driver. He still comes over from time to time but refuses to bring his wife as he is scared that we will ‘corrupt’ his new lady. Mind you, what he means by corrupt is practically telling her what rights she has in Australia and that there are free programs for learning English. He just locks her in the house all day and won’t let her work or practically go outside at all unless it’s a necessity. We tried to convince him that this wouldn’t be the case but he still refuses to this day.
All in all, he was just plain horrible from the beginning.”
Not At The Dinner Table!
“I have a friend who was also a lodger in my house for a few years. He’d always been a smoker but was good enough to never smoke in the house. However, a couple of years ago he was in town and I offered that he stay at my place rather than pay for a hotel.
At breakfast, I was astonished when he took out his vape, started puffing away and blew the vapor right at me as I was eating.
‘Dude, do you mind?’
He was completely nonplussed. ‘What?’
‘I’d rather you didn’t do that in my house, especially when I’m eating!’
‘Mate, it’s completely harmless, you should read up…’
‘I don’t care, I don’t want it in my face. Either put it out or smoke in the garden!’
‘It isn’t smoke!’
‘Dude, I don’t care!’
The rest of his stay was a bit on the frosty side. He acted like the wronged party.”
Get a Room Already
“I was living in a quad apartment at the time in college with two roommates.
Anyway, one day my roommate and his friends were partying in his room, drinking, and whatnot, which is totally fine. I’m on the living room couch sprawled out working on a business plan while watching Robot Chicken.
My other roommate and his girlfriend are on the couch against the back wall facing the TV slightly behind me and to my left.
Then comes two of my new-roommates friends, a girl and a guy (just met). They sit down on the couch and start talking. They are so trashy that my other roommate gets up and leaves with his girlfriend and gives me a look. I was staying sort of for the same reason one goes to the zoo (also it was my apartment).
I go back to watching Robot Chicken and so do they. He’s on the corner and she’s now laying back against his chest. Girl grabs a blanket and throws it over their waists (it is a tad cold). A minute passes. Even while looking the other way, computer in lap, working on a business plan with Robot Chicken blaring I can tell EXACTLY what is going on under that blanket. I refocus my eyes on my computer screen and see their reflection.
Yup, definitely straight to third base.
They thought they were so clever that I wouldn’t know what was going on under my roommate’s blanket. And I’m just sitting there staring at my business plan mentally facepalming. This goes on for about a minute or two and I decide what to do. I get up, stretch, give a very intentionally fake cough, walk to the door to my room (next to the TV), and pick up my roommate’s smokes on the way and go inside closing the door.
I could immediately tell I had given enough signal to let them know I wasn’t an idiot as I could hear that they had gotten up (Didn’t actually expect them to stop immediately, but apparently the girl had some shred of self-dignity to be embarrassed). I open the door and they are picking up their stuff, girl’s face is beet red. I act as I had just gone to pick something up in my room. The guy immediately leaves, and she seems intent on staying for a moment (obnoxiously clear she isn’t trying to leave the same time as the guy – she already has her stuff picked up and is just… waiting).
The moment the door swings shut I grin and offer her a cig. She turns beet red again, takes it and leaves, mutters thank you, and leaves all while avoiding eye contact.
Sorry, I reserve the right to make fun of you if you pull that stuff in my place and I don’t know you. Only my roommates can get away with that.”
Peggy The Phariah
“My (ex) sister-in-law, Peggy. My brother had just divorced her, and she didn’t have her own place to live. So who did she come to? Me. She rang the doorbell and the second I opened the door she barged right in. ‘Hey, Mare-Mare (I HATE it when she calls me that), I’m going to need a place to stay for a bit. Can you show me the guest room?’ I was already starting to fume. ‘Peg, why couldn’t you find a hotel?’ ‘Because you’re family. And it’s free.’ The audacity of this person! ‘I’ll just find it myself.’ She said, and pushed past me. Glass broke. ‘Oops!’ I heard her say. I ran to the site of the crash. She had bumped into our dining room hutch. She broke half of my favorite china. I bit back tears and pushed her into the guest room.
Next morning. I wake up and go to the kitchen. She’s wasted half of my favorite coffee trying to figure out our Keurig. She put coffee in the space where the K-Cup was supposed to go which ruined our machine. On top of that, she was wearing my favorite robe and spilled coffee all over it! My husband was away on business and couldn’t fix any of this. ‘Peggy!’ I screamed. ‘Oh, come on, Mare-Mare. No biggie.’ The rest of that day was a nightmare. I wanted to go shopping that day but I couldn’t because I had to make sure Peggy didn’t destroy our house.
This persisted for two days until she met some man online dating and moved in with him. She’ll probably end up back here someday, it’s only been a year, but, lord knows what I’ll do when she comes back.”
A Coward And A Thief!
“Had a party around 10th grade. Found some guy messing around with some stuff in my room, didn’t think much of it when it was happening, just assumed he was just leaving after an eventful hook-up. Later the next day (after cleaning my bed a thousand times) I notice all my USBs are gone as well as some of my Nintendo DS games and the DS itself. Also noticed my wallet emptied (had around $60 in there).
It’s a Monday. I go up to the bloke and ask him if he knows anything about the stuff that got stolen. He denies it but I don’t trust him at all, he had a really fidgety and nervous look. I later walk past his locker and see the DS itself stashed up top with my name sticker STILL ON IT. I go up to him and ask him about it, he immediately rips the sticker off kicks me in the nuts, and bolts the Headmaster’s office. Next thing I know I hear my name being called out over the intercom and I have been called to the principles office. Finally some justice I think.
I get the principles office and the old prick takes one look at this quivering whiny prick who stole my best save in Pokemon Pearl (Still the longest and best save to this day) and says to me ‘Jonno, I would have thought that you had known better to steal other peoples things, considering this act took place in school, I’ll be calling your parents in to have a talk’ WHAT THE ACTUAL HECK. I swear to god I said to the old fart’s face ‘What the heck!’ But I honestly can’t remember because I was so angry.
10 minutes later, mum comes in (thank whatever the heck is out there cause Dad is at work) and sits down, the first thing she does is look at the DS on the Headmasters desk and says ‘Wait, who stole from who here?!’ And then the headmaster says the dumb ignorant idiot he was ‘Jonno here was caught beating Harry after he stole some items from his locker.’ My mum stares so intensely at the old stuff I swear that microwaves were emanating from my Mothers eyes and were cooking the headmaster’s head right on his shoulders and says ‘You called me all the way over here to tell me my Son has tried to reclaim his own stolen items.’ The headmaster’s reply was a simple and standard procedure ‘We can understand how upset you must be to find your Son stealing but we must ask you to be rational and look at the larger picture here.’ He hands the DS back to Henry and then says ‘I think that a 3-day suspension would be a sufficient disciplinary action.’ My mum says some incoherent rage words, grabs my hand and walks the heck out of the office as if she owned it.
In the car back home she instructs me to call my older brother and ask him when he next has a day off of work. He informs me it’s a Wednesday and my mum takes the phone and tells him to keep it free, we get home and she goes to her room to continue talking with my brother. I still don’t know what she asked him to do but oh buy, I love my Mother..
Wednesday comes around, my mum tells me to go with my brother to the front of the school gates. We wait there for a few minutes, the bell goes and the kids start flooding out. Soon enough I spot Henry and tell my Bro. He’s chatting with some bloke I’ve never seen before and they walk around the corner into a quiet street. Henry hands the DS over to the chubby fat kid and the fat kid in return passes over some cash. My brother drives around and tells me to stay in the car while he puts on a balaclava. I start getting scared my mother told him to beat the heck out of the prick and that it’s gone too far for what it’s worth.
My brother walks over, both boys doodied their pants and back up against the fence. My brother just stands in front of them and then screams really loudly. Fatty pees his pants (actually does), drops his bag with the DS, and runs. Henry pulls out a switchblade and tries to stab my brother, which his response to was to slog him in the face. He calls the police, they take Henry to the station and he gets sent to Juvenile Jail for attempted murder or something. My brother gets off Scot-free with a claim of self-defense. My Mum and bro both laughed about it, and then never ever talked about it since. I got my USB and DS back along with the games and Fatty didn’t come back to that school ever.”
Farewell Father
“I ended up kicking the guest out. The guest was my own father.
I was for the third time on leave from work due to depression, generalized anxiety, insomnia and active PTSD. Still managing to function somehow (do weekly therapy, take meds daily, medical appointments once a month, eat, shower daily, pay bills, do groceries/errands weekly, see a movie once a week).
My father lived 8 hours away and whenever he came to visit, he always preferred to stay with me, in my small 1 bedroom apartment. He would sleep on the floor on an inflatable mattress in front of the TV (24/7 on CNN — his choice, not mine).
He would insist I get up at 6 AM and live according to his rules. I didn’t have the energy to fight with him but insisted on sleeping at least until 8.
My mother lived 20 minutes away and despite being divorced from him, kept in touch with him and so she invited us for supper at her new place. It was near my therapist’s office so I knew the way but my father argued with me the whole way that I was giving him the wrong directions to her place. I wasn’t and proved him wrong.
The visit went well, met the new boyfriend and had great conversations.
The next day, my mother called to have brunch together ‘for old time’s sake’… father, mother, and daughter.
At the restaurant, they started to say how disappointed they were about the slowness of my recovery process from major depression, they didn’t approve of my doctors and therapist, didn’t like the effects the new antidepressants were having on me, that they wanted their ‘old’ daughter back and then threaten to have me legally declared unfit and move me into a group home for disabled adults.
I was fuming and did not make a scene. I’m not one to act out in anger. I’d rather think things through and find solutions.
Went back to my apartment, getting angrier by the minute. Told him I had had enough of them dictating how I should live my life. Recovery is not a linear thing, especially when dealing with mental health.
He had planned to leave later in the day but I told him that it would be best that he leave right now because I was too angry with him and mom. That I couldn’t trust myself not to lose it completely and do something that I will regret for the rest of my life. He laughed and I told him I was dead serious… so he left.
I spent the rest of Sunday afternoon trying to calm down and once I managed to get calmer, I went on the Internet and did some research on what ‘mentally incompetent’ meant in legal terms, contacted a community outreach organization for some free legal advice, and wrote them an email.
I was extremely lucky that on THAT Sunday evening someone from their organization contacted me upon receiving my email. He told me in no uncertain terms that my parents were in the wrong because from what he gathered I was very competent mentally and gave me further details as to why he believed so.
The next day, my mother called and asked me what I thought about the ultimatum and what I was going to do from now on. I told her I contacted someone who offered me legal advice and that their threat would fail and why. Let’s just say she wasn’t happy with what I told her.
I was 38 y/o then, I’m almost 50 and I’m still dealing with their shenanigans because that is what controlling parents do.
My father has never stayed at my apartment since. He stays at my uncle’s whenever he visits. It’s better that way.
As for my mental health issues … I’ve had to take early retirement for medical reasons. A decision was taken after attempting to return to work on 6 different occasions all resulting in longer long-term leave every time. It’s not for a lack of trying and it’s not due to laziness either. It just is.”
Good Riddance!
“I’ve had to kick the family out of my house before. My husband’s step-sister, who I had met only once, wanted to visit from overseas with her family (2 children and an adult couple). We gladly told them they were more than welcome.
Well, more than welcome apparently meant she intended to stay in our tiny home for 3 weeks! I was taken aback when she gave us the dates but didn’t say anything. I fully expected them to rent a car and go visit stuff: after all, this was their chance to visit the US at a reasonable price and we lived in an NYC suburb, so they had plenty to do.
After a few days, it became obvious they didn’t intend to buy food for themselves, as she conveniently ‘forgot’ her wallet when we went grocery shopping together. They were also vegetarian, but as she said ‘they were more than happy with fish and seafood, the children liked salmon especially).
I mean, really? We were not well-to-do, just middle class and trying to make ends meet like everyone and it’s not like she had some misconception about America, since her dad immigrated to Houston when my husband was 9. No, she just fully expected me to cook and clean for them all, with their own special diet, and be happy to do so.
They left early after one long berating session where she and her husband told me they didn’t feel ‘welcome.’ I told them they were not. They left and never even called my husband again. 10 years ago!
