Need coffee in order to function in the morning? If you can’t even think about talking to someone until you’ve had your morning cup of joe, don’t worry, it’s good for your health. Huh? Yeah, you read that right. Your coffee addiction could be prolonging your life.
A new study performed by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health has found a link between coffee and a longer life. “In our study, we found people who drank three to five cups of coffee per day had about 15 percent lower [risk of premature] mortality compared to people who didn’t drink coffee,” says Walter Willet, one of the study authors. The study looked at 167,000 women and 40,000 men and found that the coffee drinkers were less likely to die from heart disease, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and suicide.
But it’s not all the caffeine that helps prolong the coffee addicts’ lives. People who drank decaf coffee also saw the same health benefits. The researchers were not able to nail down a definitive cause or ingredient that leads to lower risk of premature death, but the coffee beans do contain compounds that reduce inflammation.
The study did not specify how the participants drank their coffee, whether it was black or loaded with sugary creamer. All we know is coffee is good for you so drink up!
