Tender beef paired with cheese slices, lettuce, pickle, tomato, and stacked onto a bun, the cheeseburger is an American classic. You can't turn to a cheeseburger every night, though, which is why the cheeseburger casserole was invented. This dinner option blends the savoriness of two family-friendly dishes!

  • 2 cups rotini pasta
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 cup white onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup freshly diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups low-fat shredded cheddar

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees; spray a 9-by-13 inch baking dish with cooking spray and set aside.

  2. In a large pot, cook the pasta according to the directions on the package. (Noodles typically take 7-8 minutes before they’re finished.) Strain the cooked noodles in a colander and put back in the large pot.

  3. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the olive oil, beef, white onion, garlic, and salt and pepper. Cook for 4-5 minutes or until the beef slightly browns.

  4. Once the beef has browned, add the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir constantly and mix well with a wooden spoon for 2-3 minutes. The mixture should slightly bubble.

  5. As soon as the pasta is done, add the meat mixture into the pot with the noodles. Stir everything together. Once combined, spread everything evenly in the greased baking dish. Top with the shredded cheddar cheese.

  6. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 15 minutes.

What To Add To Your Cheeseburger Casserole

Chopped tomato on wooden cutting board

Your cheeseburger casserole recipe should pertain to your specific tastes. Some home chefs like to add garnishes over their casseroles. Dill pickle, diced tomatoes, or some herbs are good ways to top off your creation.

If you're looking to give your casserole a nice kick, you can sprinkle in a pinch of red chili flakes or a teaspoon of hot sauce into the meat mixture. Add a teaspoon or two of Italian seasoning to provide more flavor without any of the heat.

If you find the tang of Worcestershire sauce too overpowering, you can swap it out with HP sauce, A.1. sauce, or red wine.
