All through December, we’re gobbling up homemade cookies and seasonal dinners and guzzling sweet Christmas cocktails. Perhaps the most beloved holiday staple, however, is eggnog. Try making your own this year with our simple recipe — you can make it non-alcoholic or spruce it up with some bourbon. Either way, our eggnog is sure to make your spirits bright.
The Perfect Holiday Eggnog
- 6 large eggs
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 3 1/2 cups whole milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 3 egg whites
- ground nutmeg for garnish

In a saucepan, whisk the whole eggs and sugar until the mixture becomes a light yellow color.
Whisk in the heavy cream, milk, and vanilla. Stir until everything is combined.
Place your saucepan on the stove and cook the mixture over medium heat; bring to a boil. Stir with a wooden spoon for about 4-5 minutes or until a thermometer reads 160 degrees.
After the allotted time, strain the mixture through a sieve into a large bowl.
Put the mixture, uncovered, in the fridge. Let it cool for 1-2 hours or until it is completely cool.
In a mixing bowl, beat the egg whites until a soft peak forms. As soon as the peak has formed, whisk the egg whites into the refrigerated mixture.
Serve in individual glasses topped with a sprinkle of nutmeg.
How To Dress Up Your Eggnog
If you want alcoholic eggnog, try adding a splash of bourbon, rum, or brandy to the heavy cream and milk.
You can also try different garnishes. Add a cinnamon stick or two or a sprinkle of ground cinnamon to the nutmeg. Top your nog with whipped cream for even more sugary goodness.
If you need a shot of adrenaline, you can mix your eggnog with coffee. Just add your eggnog and some brewed coffee to a saucepan and cook over medium-low heat for a few minutes. Top with your favorite garnishes, and your caffeinated eggnog will be ready for consumption.
