When planning a wedding, there are a lot of decisions to be made. Like, where will the wedding be held? When will the wedding be held? What color scheme will the wedding follow? What is the budget for the wedding? And those are the big decisions. But then, there’s a whole slew of micro-decisions that need to be made; those decisions start to stack up over time.
Luckily, we’re going to make one of those decisions for you today: we prefer wooden flowers for weddings over real flowers. Also known as Sola wood flowers (or shola), these blooms are crafted from the renewable wood of a marshy plant.
If you have been following bridal trends over the years, you know that wood flowers have been rising in popularity both due to A) their affordability and B) their sustainability. Those aren’t the only reasons to choose wood flowers, though! We totally prefer wooden flowers over real flowers for weddings, and here’s why.
Wooden Flowers are Cheaper
If you’ve ever planned a wedding before, you’ve probably fallen out of your chair when getting quotes from local florists. Quotes can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars!
However, as an affordable alternative to cut flowers, wood flowers cost just a fraction of the price. Woodn’t your wedding budget like that?!
Wooden Flowers are Eco-Friendly
Wooden flowers are an eco-friendly way to celebrate your wedding day because they’re both a renewable resource and can be reused in other ways. The wood that is used to make wooden flowers (cassova, derived from a tapioca root plant) grows quickly and can be used to produce hundreds of wooden flowers.
Wooden flowers are also eco-friendly because they can be reused. If you want to keep them “in the family,” try passing them on to other family members who are getting married. Because wood flowers keep forever, you won’t have to worry about keeping them fresh in between transfers. Or, you can try reusing them for other celebrations throughout your family’s life such as birthday parties, graduation parties, anniversary celebrations, and so on and so forth.
If you don’t necessarily care about keeping your wood flowers in your family after the wedding, there are a few ways that you can pass on the love. For starters, you could post in a local bridal group to see if any brides are in need of wood flowers for their wedding. The cool thing about wood flowers is that they can be repainted to match any color scheme, so you should be able to find a bride who is interested in taking them for her wedding.
If you aren’t a part of a bridal group on Facebook, you could try posting on a local Buy Nothing group to see if anybody wants them. You would be surprised at the reasons why people want things, and it’ll be nice to see the flowers go to a good home.
Lastly, if you aren’t a part of any of these Facebook groups, you could always donate your used wood flowers to a long-term care facility or nursing home. The residents will likely appreciate the pop of color. Plus, they’ll last (and be able to provide joy) forever. The important thing is that your flowers will get a new life and will be able to be reused and recycled, over and over again.
Eco-chic!
Wooden Flowers Can Help Customize Your Color Palette
Wooden flowers are great because they can match your color palette exactly. You can purchase sola wood flowers already dyed or in raw wood form. We prefer the raw wood form because you can paint your wood flowers to match your exact color scheme.
Painting the wood flowers can be a long and tedious task, so we recommend grabbing a few of your bridesmaids and making a paint party out of it! Make sure to have swatches of your color scheme nearby so you can have the right paint colors on hand.
On your special day, you’ll feel super accomplished (besides getting married, ahem) that you added to your wedding’s overall theme in such a crafty, fun, and memorable way.
Wooden Flowers are Allergy-Friendly
Know anybody with allergies? We sure do, and that’s another reason why we love wooden flowers. Because wood flowers don’t produce pollen, nor are they scented…they should be acceptable for members of the wedding party with even the most unforgiving of allergies.
Wooden Flowers are Everlasting*
*Well, mostly. All good things have to come to an end, and wooden flowers are no exception. But they do last much, much longer than regular flowers and could be a staple in your home (or at your family’s events) for years and years to come. Here’s how to fluff and clean sola wood flowers.
What’s not to love about durability?
Wooden Flowers are Whimsical and Original
Lastly, we love the idea of wooden flowers at a wedding because they’re whimsical and original. It’s hard to tell the difference between wooden flowers and real flowers from a distance. People will be shocked when you tell them that all the flowers are made out of wood. You will stand out from other brides, and that’s a good thing!
Our vote? Yes, yes, and a million times yes for wood flowers. If we haven’t given you enough reasons already, go check them out for yourself on Amazon and Etsy.
