    Oven-Baked Dutch Baby Pancake

    Recipe

    Ingredients

    • 5 tablespoons salted butter
    • 6 large eggs
    • 1 cup milk
    • 1 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
    • pinch of salt
    • powdered sugar
    • fresh fruit
    • syrup

    Supplies

    • 9-by-13-inch baking dish
    • large bowl
    • whisk

    Directions

    1. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees.

    2. As the oven heats, prepare a 9-by-13-inch baking dish by placing the butter in the center of the baking dish. Place the dish in the oven and allow the butter to melt for about 5 minutes.

    3. Meanwhile, crack the eggs into in a large bowl and beat them with a whisk until they are light in color and frothy. Add the milk, flour, pure vanilla extract, and salt and whisk until the batter is well blended.

    4. Remove the baking dish from the oven and pour the batter over the melted butter. Bake the pancake for 22-25 minutes or until it is golden brown and has puffed up on the sides.

    5. Sprinkle the pancake with powdered sugar and top with your choice of fresh fruit and syrup. Serve immediately.

A Dutch baby pancake will deflate slightly after being removed from the oven and allowed to sit at room temperature.

A Dutch baby pancake, also referred to as a German pancake, is a large American popover. This savory golden brown oven-baked pancake is light and fluffy, but it is also thicker than most traditional pancakes cooked over a stovetop. Our Dutch baby recipe is incredibly simple to prepare; it requires only six simple ingredients that are more than likely already on your shelves. This delicious pancake can be whipped up in 30 minutes — it’s the perfect breakfast to serve to a hungry crowd on a busy morning.

Typically a Dutch baby pancake is enjoyed with a liberal dusting of powdered sugar and topped with a selection of fresh fruits, specifically berries such as strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, cranberries, or blueberries. It is then drizzled with pure maple syrup for an additional touch of sweetness.

Although the sweet version of the Dutch baby is divine, this oven-baked pancake can also be topped with savory ingredients to transform it into a hearty meal fit for lunch or even dinner. Top your oven-baked Dutch baby with the following delicious foods for some fabulous flavor:

    • sautéed veggies and a sunny-side-up egg
    • lox and cream cheese
    • fried eggs and avocado slices
    • bacon and shredded cheese
    • fried eggs, prosciutto, and chives
    • heirloom tomatoes and fried eggs
    • diced ham and shiitake mushrooms
    • pesto-dressed vegetables

Whether you choose to enjoy this puffy golden pancake as a savory or sweet meal, it will undoubtedly become a favorite in your home for its simplicity and versatility.
